Trails at the Boreal's Edge

Cabin Trail

For a short stroll around the cabin, start heading towards the firepit and follow the green arrows that turn to the left. The trail will take you back out to the road where you can walk back to the cabin driveway for a quick loop. A perfect walk for some fresh air.

Hiking the Cabin Road

The cabin road becomes unmaintained a few hundred metres beyond the property, making it the perfect road for a long walk or hike. During the winter, snow shoes are required, but the rest of the year you can walk for many kilometers along the connecting roads. Suitable for a bike or rugged stroller --just watch for ATV's.

Wildlife

Blue Jay

Birds

The Boreal's Edge is a bird-watchers paradise. The most common species to be found are blue jays, chickadees, nuthatches, finches, pine warblers and woodpeckers; such as the Pileated, Hairy and Downy. You might also spot a Northern Flicker or a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker.

Other bird species that occasionally visit are Bald Eagles, wild turkey, Red-Tailed Hawks, Coopers Hawks and Barred Owls. We love to see the birds that visit the property and encourage guests to send in their photos for a chance to be featured on our social media pages.

Mammals

The Boreal Shield ecozone is home to some of Canada's most iconic animal species such as the moose and beaver. The following are just some of the other mammals you might see:

  • Wolves and canid hybrids (a mix of coyote and Eastern Wolves, commonly referred to as bush wolves)
  • Whitetail Deer & Elk
  • Black Bear
  • Raccoons, porcupines and skunks
  • Snowshoe hares, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels and flying squirrels
  • Foxes, fishers, muskrats and otters
  • Brown bats

Snakes, Reptiles and Amphibians

Garter snakes, toads, tree frogs, salamanders and leopard frogs are just a few of the species you might encounter during your stay. All of them play an important role in the ecosystem. Our region is also home to the five-lined-skink (Canada's only lizard), as well as numerous turtle species and other snake and frog species.

Insects & Bugs

You can't have a true rural experience without the presence of bugs, flies, spiders and other insects. The smallest residents of our ecozone are some of the most important. During the months of May to August, we recommend bringing insect repellent to ensure your comfort if you plan on spending time outdoors.
